How Does Summer Practicum Work?

Under special circumstances and with prior approval, students may choose to take a practicum over the summer, use a summer mission trip for practicum credit or begin their internships sequence during the summer.

While SUM does not offer a traditional summer term, there are opportunities for students to continue their studies during the summer. Intersession intensive classes are often offered during the summer. These classes are typically five weeks long and are designed to satisfy elective program requirements for undergraduate and graduate students.

Students can also earn practical ministry credit over the summer.

Students participating in summer mission trips, leading youth and children events, joining an evangelistic outreach or participating in a special summer program may apply to take a summer practicum. Prior approval must be obtained through the student life and ministry office. Similarly, students needing to retake practicums or finish their practicum series to begin their internship program may request to complete a summer practicum. In certain cases a student may not have three terms remaining to complete their internship. In that case, a student can complete an internship over the summer as well.

All summer student ministry coursework must have prior approval. Additionally, while students will complete the work in the summer, they will register and pay for the course in the fall term.
