This article will help you to use atla and EBSCO, helping you to us our library and choose articles and eBooks.
For a scripture search watch this video:
Here is a basic method to start a search:
Logging in:
First Screen, in the outlined boxes, you will put in the SUM ID and the Password:
This will lead you to choose databases. I have it set it up so all but the dissertations are chosen automatically, so most of the time you will just hit continue.
If you want certain databases, hit the select/deselect box which will deselect all the databases and then
Choose the databases you want:
Now hit the continue button
The next page will come up with this:
What you will use is the advanced search, for this tutorial we you will not change the select the field area:
Go down the page and choose full text. This will give articles that have the whole article not just the citation. Next to it is scholarly. If you want only journals articles then you can mark this box but most of the time you will want eBooks as well.
To choose a language:
To choose a language on the right click languages:
Clicking on Languages you get this and click the language you want:
I also chose on the left side only materials in Spanish
This is what the screen will look like:
Now it is time to pick a search term. You will usually pick two but I am doing them separately. Then we will talk about using Boolean logic with two or more search terms. In this case, I have used the word gas. I put in gas or g and EBSCO suggested gasoline. Or in EBSCO means I want all articles that either have gas or gasoline in it and it will take out all duplicates so you will have only one of each article.
There are 93,390 articles and eBooks that are full text.
In research we can use two other ways. The first is to select a field in this case subject. A subject heading is what the article or book is about. Most article have multiple subject heading. These chosen by humans. For gas or gasoline the indexers felt that 25,124 articles had this subject heading.
Most researchers will put what the article is about in the title. This will refine the search even more. There are 11,431.
I have chosen engines for my second. Here it is asking me if I want both singular and plural. By choosing engines, I will get both engine and engines and there are 5,968 articles and eBooks which both gas or gasoline and engines are found. I have also gone back to select a field so anywhere in the citation or article the word appears it considered a hit.
Now I will use the las Boolean term “not” to get rid of a term I do not want. In this case I will use car, but I see I can put together cars or automobiles or vehicles, that is more encompassing so I will use that.
This is what the search will look like. You can see I have 1,763
You can add another search box if need by clicking on the plus (use the minus to subtract a box).
I added American which brought the number down to 667.
I want to now talk about other limiters available. First is date. When I changed the date from articles published between 2016 to 2022 it brought the number down to 347.
Next limiter to source type. In this case I limited what I want to eBooks and academic journals. this is really useful when looking for a particular book because by clicking eBooks and not reviews, you will not have to wade through all the reviews which can be quite a lot. So now 86.
Looking at the Articles
A citation and not full text will look like this. It has no hyper links.
Now I want to talk about how to tell if it is citation or full test. The easiest way is to click on the left full text so you only get full text. A full text will look like this. You will see it has blue hyperlinks. EPUB full text will allow you to read on line. Full Download will allow you to read off line. If you are not on a mobile device you will need to download Adobe Digital Editions.
When I have pulled up the book, I usually do not need to read the whole book so I will use the search within feature:
There are also a list of other things you can do:
Add to folder allows you to put the citation and link into a folder. This is found at the top of the page:
After you add this it will look like this:
Save pages, print pages, Google Drive, and email pages will tell you how many if any that you can use. Being a pdf is it saying up to 100 at one time.
Cite will allow you to do Chicago but not Turabian. If you use the Chicago citation you are responsible to make sure it meets SUM’s Turabian standards.
I would not use dictionary, I looked up paradigm and it had no definition. Export is only for the citation and so not really useful. Permalink will take you to the book. It can be quite useful. Zotero can do that to.
Detailed Record
If you click on the title that bring you to the detailed record this is an enhanced citation.
On the right side is all these neat things you can do but only with the citation. It all the same as what you do when inside of a full text book but it is only the citation that you are dealing with.
There are two features that can be useful. Subjects and categories you can either directly go to those terms or cut and paste those hyperlinks into the search boxes so as to work with two or more terms at one time.
The results will look like this:
Scripture Searching
Scripture searching can be at times useful. It is found on the top.
Once you click on this you get this:
You pick the book you want then you can either choose say Judges and get articles on Judges or you can expand into chapters within Judges. You can go one step further and expand into verses. When you are dealing with the book, it will always be accurate but by the time you get to verses it is not always as accurate.
