What are practicums?

Understanding undergraduate student Ministry and Practicum requirements at SUM.

Preparation for ministry involves excellence in general studies, theological reflection, and field ministry. SUM believes that ministry preparation must be coupled with practical hands-on ministry.

SUM graduates will have had over 500 hours of supervised ministry.

This gives a graduate a wide range of experience to draw upon when they serve in Christian ministry. Practicum is an opportunity for students to minister the gospel to individuals and the community with hands-on methods. It is about the praxis of ministry and is a systematic attempt to train students to apply what they are learning in the classroom in real life settings.

Undergraduate students will complete a total of 12 practicums as a part of their BA program.

First- & Second-Year students must enroll in 2 practicums every trimester, consecutively. Each practicum is 4 hours per week, for 10 weeks. Unless otherwise noted, each practicum is worth 1 credit.
